Left Over Bread

My tolerant husband said he really didn’t understand why I would want to do anything with the left over dead sandwich bread that is crowding our freezer, in fact why freeze it, just get rid of it. I on the other hand am trying to be lest wastful and find this throw away just too excessive.  Of course at this moment I don’t know what I’m going to do with it…you can only eat so many croutons. I’ll let you know.dsc00534

How about bread pudding? My grandmother used to make it all the time and I loved it as a child. Here is one site with recipes: http://www.straight.com/article/bread-puddings-recipes.

  2. Leftover bread would be great for making different things. Here are some ideas:

    1. french toast
    2. garlic bread slices
    3. oven cheese sandwiches (grilled cheese but baked not grilled – no butter required)
    4. baked mini pizzas
    5. toast with jam

  3. savory bread pudding! (or sweet bread pudding)

  4. there’s actually a great recipe on epicurious.com for a pumpkin bread pudding with caramel sauce :P stuffing also comes to mind with thanksgiving so close…

  5. Sounds like bread pudding of some sort is the way to go. I have to admitt that I live with 3 very serious bread snobs and I’m always left with odds and ends of sandwich bread used for school lunches-the bagettes are scarfed down within moments of entering the apt.
I need to convince my family to eat french toast that is not made from challah and I was thinking of making the raisin bread into croutons with an indian curry/spicey flavor.
I am also thinking of trying some of the bread smashed in the paninni press and then cut up as a cracker substitute.

  6. I have a hard time with left over or frozen bread. To repeat myself: we rarely have bread in the house this is part of my effort to force my other half into veggies, salads or the like. I consistently fail in this effort to at least modify his eating habits. He does like bread pudding which I have never made, and I doubt that at this late point I will attempt it. I think I’m wandering because in fact I have little to contribute here.
